Special Commissioner of Police for Traffic, Dependra Pathak, today said that road accidents and fatalities had declined over the last seven years in Delhi.
The officer was speaking at a conference on the 'Role of Corporates in Road Safety' organised by the FICCI here.
The police hopes that this year accidents and fatalities will see a further decrease. It has been on the decline over the last seven years, he said.
Pathak said that the traffic police was working on improving the process of catching culprits with the help of technology, improvement in road infrastructure, among others.
"Inadequate pedestrian crossings, subways, and poorly designed and maintained footpaths cause serious threat to road safety. We are working with agencies to address these issues," said the officer, who is also the Delhi Police's spokesperson.
Pathak also said that offences such as drunk driving not only attract a fine, but the driving licence is also seized. This has acted as a strong deterrent for errant drivers.
"Most of accidents caused last year were due to the driver's fault," he said.
Other speakers at the event also stressed on role of technology in ensuring implementation of road safety rules, needed to change drivers' mindset.
