Four armed persons broke into grocer Haji Iqbal's house but the robbery bid was foiled by neighbours and other locals, according to police.
"The armed youths held Iqbal, his wife Navaban, daughter Sahin and son Irfan captive at gunpoint.
"When Iqbal tried to resist the robbery attempt and raised a cry, two robbers brutally hit on his head with the butt of a gun," a senior police official said.
Hearing Iqbal's cry for help several neighbours rushed to his house, he said.
A robber identified as Akansh Tyagi was beaten to death while Qasim was seriously injured in the incident, police said.
Qasim, who has several cases against his name, has been admitted to district hospital, they said.
A countrymade pistol and steel rods used by the robbers were recovered from the spot.
Iqbal suffered injuries in the incident and has been admitted to hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.
