The city police claimed to have foiled a robbery bid today, with the arrest of three armed burglars in suburban Goregaon.
The accused who have been identified as Santosh Chavan (42), Vijay Gharat (26) and Ananta Patole (45) were arrested with weapons yesterday after they reached near a Goregaon bus depot to execute their robbery plan, police said.
According to the police, reliable information was received by officials of Crime Branch Unit XII that a robbers' gang had conspired to rob a commercial establishment in Goregaon yesterday afternoon, Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime) M Dahikar said.
Accordingly a trap was laid when the gang of five, including the three who were arrested, were found moving suspiciously in the area, he said.
"We managed to catch three robbers while the other two managed to slip away into the crowd," the officer said, adding that, "A chopper, a sickle, a revolver and three live rounds were recovered from them."
The accused were booked under Section 399 (preparing to commit dacoity) and Section 402 (assembling for purpose of committing dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Arms Act, police said.
The accused were earlier found to be involved in robberies reported in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district besides a bag lifting incident in Chennai city, they said.
