Jammu and Kashmir government today said Rs 200 crore have been allocated from the Prime Minister's Development Package for boosting sports infrastructure in the state including construction of 12 indoor stadia.
Minister for Youth Services and Sports Imran Ansari said this in the Legislative Assembly during the Question Hour.
"Under Prime Minister's special package, Rs 200 crore would be utilised for the development of sports infrastructure across the state. As many as 12 indoor stadia would be constructed under the package," he said.
Replying to a question asked by former chief minister Omar Abdullah, Ansari said the government would consider having a corpus fund for providing equipment to sportspersons of the state so that they can compete at national and international level.
He said as per the standing policy, the playing fields are developed or constructed wherever state land or free-of-cost land is available as the land compensation is not covered in any scheme.
He said the playfield at the Government Boys High School Rathsun in Beerwah, Omar's constituency, at an estimated cost of Rs 8.07 lakh by way of levelling and filling has been completed in 2014-15.
"However the land at Sozieth, Narbal, Makhama and Wattalpora in Beerwah constituency shall be considered for development as playfields in case land is suitable and transferred to the department free of cost, subject to the availability of sufficient funds," Ansari said.
Intervening during the reply of the minister, Speaker Kavinder Gupta asked the government to formulate a comprehensive sports policy for the upgrading sports infrastructure in the state.
