The 41-year-old "Rock of Ages" actor brought the Pooch so that they can practice being parents by looking after the dog called 'Bear', reported Contactmusic.
The actor and his partner Laura Gallacher, 27, are going to be parents of their first child.
"Ever since Russell moved to the countryside he has been desperate to get a dog - and saw this as the right time. He reckons looking after Bear will be good practice for him and Laura before baby arrives this summer," a source said.
