SDMC campaign brings 12000 underprivileged students to school

Over 12,000 underprivileged children living in the national capital have been enrolled in schools under the SDMC's special campaign 'Neev', the civic body said today.
Under this campaign, 12,050 children were enrolled in schools in all the four zones of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), with active support of approximately 4,000 teachers and 300 volunteers of various NGOs, Chairman of Education Committee of SDMC Ashish Sood said.
The campaign was run in four SDMC zones - Central, South, West and Najafgarh -- from June 14 to June 30. A total of 5,118 boys and 6,932 girls were enrolled during the campaign.
The zone wise break-up for boys is Central (2,002), South (1,038), West (898) and Najafgarh (1,180).
The zone wise break-up for girls is Central (3,429), South (1,062), West (1,220) and Najafgarh (1,221).
Sood said during the campaign, the civic body had established a helpline which received 70 calls.
"Apart from our four zones we also got calls from NDMC (North Delhi Municipal Corporation - 16 calls) and EDMC (East Delhi Municipal Corporation - 12 calls)," he said.
The zone wise break-up for SDMC calls is -- Central (10), South (16), West (6) and Najafgarh (10).
According to Sood, there are about 600 schools under the SDMC's jurisdiction.
"We have not been able to complete work in some schools during the summer vacations. But action will be taken against officials if found guilty," he told reporters.
The main emphasis of the campaign, according to SDMC, was on girl child, children of construction workers and children with special needs.
As part of the campaign, children aged between 6 and 14, were identified through a door-to-door survey. The survey was conducted by over 4,000 schoolteachers of SDMC and about 300 volunteers from about 10 NGOs.
