Security will be beefed up in Sri Lanka's Tamil-dominated Jaffna city after the assassination attempt on a high court judge and the death of three security personnel, a senior police official said today.
"We have to adopt different strategies now to ensure security of the people and the police, Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundera told reporters.
He was responding to queries on two incidents, murder of a policeman, who was a protection officer of Tamil judge M Illancheliyan last week and the killing of two policemen over the weekend.
Jayasundera said there will be special search and patrolling operations in the area.
He said the attackers in the latest incident of murder of two policemen who were seriously injured, have been identified.
We are searching for six others who have also been identified, Jayasundera said.
Two policemen were proceeding to conduct an inquiry over a police complaint when they were attacked by people who came in a motorcycle.
In another incident, a policeman providing security to Elenechelian was killed in a shooting incident in Jaffna. The main suspect of this incident who is a former LTTE cadre was arrested by police.
Justice Ilanechelian had presided in high profile rape and murder case of Sivaloganathan Vithya, a young student in May 2015. The incident had caused much public outrage.
The current government has come under criticism from opposition for relaxing security in the northern province.
