Criticising the government on the status of its Ganga Rejuvenation Plan, a parliamentary panel today said that it had got the impression that the "first steps" are yet to be taken for the enormous task of cleaning the river.
In its report tabled in Parliament today, the Standing Committee on Water Resources said work on schemes such as the National River Conservation Plan, National Ganga River Basin Authority, ghat work and beautification of river has remained dormant as no expenditure could be incurred for want of approvals.
"Although the details of various components of the scheme were prepared but no separate allocations were made as the schemes are still in approval stage... The Committee have got the impression that the Government is yet to take the first step towards the enormous task of cleaning and rejuvenating river Ganga," the report stated.
On the other hand, the Committee has recommended for a single Inter-State Water Disputes Tribunal.
Instead of a multifarious Inter-State Water Disputes Tribunal, a single, centralised and effective Inter-State Water Disputes Tribunal may be created for resolving the inter-state water disputes in the country, it said.
Observing that work for the Farakka Barrage Project was going on a slow pace, the panel sought to fix the responsibility.
