The 30-share index was 61.31 points or 0.24 per cent down at 25,191.01 after rising to 25,316.14 in early choppy trade with sectoral indices, led by realty, PSU, FMCGs, banking, oil&gas and auto were in negative zone.
The gauge had snapped a six-session falling streak to close 216.27 points higher in yesterday's volatile trade.
The National Stock Exchange index Nifty which went past 7,700 mark to touch a high of 7,703.05 points, succumbed to profit-booking and was down by 20.50 points or 0.27 per cent at 7,662.80.
Moreover, a mixed trend at other Asian bourses, negatively impacted sentiments, they added.
China's main Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.83 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.64 per cent while Japan's Nikkei gained 0.99 per cent in morning trade today.
The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.47 per cent higher in yesterday's trade.
