Volatility ruled early session as the Sensex fell almost 110 points today after yesterday's modest recovery, dragged down by infrastructure, PSU and capital goods stocks.
All eyes are on the release of a key US jobs report later in the day, which made investors wait and watch.
The 30-share index fell 109.54 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 27,091.95 after rising to 27,294.82 at the outset.
The gauge had gained 34.62 points in the previous session.
The NSE Nifty broke below the 8,300-mark by falling 40.40 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 8,297.50.
Traders said that apart from dilution of bets by participants to book profits, a weak trend in Asia because of caution ahead of the release of crucial US jobs data kept sentiment subdued.
Japan's Nikkei was down 0.39 per cent while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.08 per cent in morning trade today. Shanghai Composite index edged lower by 0.79 per cent.
The US Dow Jones ended 0.13 per cent lower in yesterday's trade.
