Initial media reports said the explosions were reported near the finish line at the Boston Marathon.
The Boston Police Department said it was looking into the explosions.
Footage from local television outlets showed police clearing the sidewalks where the first explosion occurred.
There were no immediate reports of any deaths, and it was not immediately clear whether the explosions were accidental.
Police and law enforcement officials have cordoned off the area.
