Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan has given his assent to the bill passed in the recently concluded Autumn Session of the Assembly, which prevents elected legislators from holding dual membership with either of the three tribal autonomous district councils in the state.
"The Governor has given his assent to the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) Amendment Bill, 2015 last evening," a senior official of the Raj Bhavan told PTI on condition of anonymity.
He said the Governor gave his assent after receiving feedback from the Advocate General considering the matter being a legally sensitive one.
The Governor's secretariat has also forwarded the approved bill to the law department for notification in the state gazette.
Seven of the eight legislators including the District Council Affairs minister H D R Lyngdoh have tendered their resignations as members of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
KHADC chief executive member P N Syiem, who was elected as an MLA from Mawsynram constituency, is yet to take a call and is likely to face the brunt of the new Act.
The Meghalaya High Court is also hearing a PIL seeking disqualification of legislators holding dual membership in the state.
