Senior BJP leader and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shanta Kumar today lashed out at the UPA government for bringing an ordinance to save "convicted and tainted" leaders.
The Centre's decision was "unfortunate and condemnable" as the proposed bill was referred to a select committee when it was introduced in Parliament in the last session, he said in a statement issued here.
"The government has brought the ordinance in a haste without waiting for the select committee's report and it would only lead to further criminalisation of the democratic polity," he said.
Kumar said the democratic system was crumbling due to "corruption and criminalisation" and the recent killings of innocent people in Muzaffarnagar communal violence was another example of it.
The number of convicted leaders sentenced to more than two years imprisonment was not more than ten and it was reprehensible to "humiliate and insult 130 crore people" to save ten persons, he added.
