The Assam police in a joint operation with its West Bengal counterpart arrested the main accused in the Silapathar incident along with his aide from Bengal's North 24-Parganas district this morning.
A seven-member team of the Assam police, led by ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla, along with the West Bengal police arrested prime accused Subodh Biswas along with his aide Subhas Biswas at Bajitpur in North 24-Parganas district, according to a statement issued by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The Silapathar incident related to ransacking of an AASU office near NH 15(B) by activists of the Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu Samanvay Raksha Samiti during a procession following a meeting on March six.
Sonowal thanked the state police for achieving the 'breakthrough'.
"I appreciate the role of Assam Police in nabbing Biswas and also express gratitude to the people for their support in maintaining peace and harmony in the aftermath of the incident," Sonowal said in a statement here.
An investigation into the incident is going on in full swing and the government will ensure that all involved in the incident are put behind bars, he said in the statement.
