Singapore Indians pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi

Indian community in Singapore today remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 147th birth anniversary with tributes paid to him.
Celebrations were led by acting Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, Paramita Tripathi with some 500 Indians and non-Indians as well the community leaders.
Lee Kwang Boon, vice president of the United Nations Association of Singapore read secretary general Ban Ki moon's message on the International Day of Non-Violence.
"In today's world Gandhi comes back to us wih truth and non-violence as the only weapon of the weak," said Prof Subrata Mitra, director Singapore think tank, Institute of South Asian Studies, in a tribute to the Mahatma.
"The seeker after the truth should have the courage to walk it alone. Be your own Gandhi," Prof Mitra told the Global Indian International School's (GIIS) students.
Ameerali Jumabhoy, chairman of Mahatma Gandhi Committee at Global Organisation of People of Indian-Origin highlighted Gandhi's wayof life.
"In an endeavour to build the value-based System that Gandhi believed in, we have spearheaded the Universal Value Programme for all the students across GIIS campuses in seven countries," added Atul Temurnikar, chairman of Global Schools Foundation, parent group of GIIS.
