"Peace and status quo will be maintained along the border at any cost and no encroachment will be allowed on either side of the border," official sources said here today.
Tension had gripped the area yesterday during an anti-encroachment drive to demolish an unauthorised building.
Kamrup (Rural) Deputy Commissioner S K Roy denied media reports of lathi-charge during yesterday's anti-encroachment drive.
Roy told PTI that police personnel had gone to demolish the unauthorised structure and faced some resistance, but later they convinced and dispersed the crowd.
Additional forces have been deployed following the incident and confidence building measures initiated in the area.
Langpih has been a disputed area between Assam and Meghalaya with both sides claiming territorial rights. Earlier on May 14, 2010 four persons were killed and 12 others injured in a clash. Assam government has set up an inquiry commission headed by Justice(Retd) P C Phukan to inquire into the incident.
