A senior government official has ordered that a police case be filed against a cooperative society controlled by Maharashtra minister Subhash Deshmukh for allegedly furnishing bogus documents.

Deshmukh, a BJP leader, is the minister for Cooperation and Textile Development.

A letter dated November 27 by Rajesh Govil, additional secretary of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, said, "A (scrutiny of a) proposal submitted by Lokmangal Multistate Cooperative Society on January 1 this year has found that 7-8 licenses were fake.

"This requires filing of an FIR (first information report) in the local police station," the letter said.

"Complaints received against Lokmangal Multistate Cooperative Society have been found to be true; hence the earlier sanctioned proposal of Rs 24.81 crore is now cancelled," the order said.

Deshmukh is founder of Lokmangal Multistate Cooperative Society which has its presence in agriculture, dairy, education, banking and finance, among others fields.

Officials at Sadarbazar police station in Solapur, Deshmukh's home district, said the process of registering a complaint against the society was underway.

Deshmukh, who had earlier denied allegations of any wrongdoing on the society's part, was not available for comments.
