Congress President Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi today condoled the death of 22 pilgrims, including seven children, in a road mishap in Andhra Pradesh, hoping that requisite relief and rehabilitation measures were being taken by authorities concerned.
"Congress President Sonia Gandhi has extended her condolences to the family members of the deceased, killed in a bus accident in Rajamundhry, Andhra Pradesh. Saddened at the unfortunate incident, Gandhi hoped that requisite relief and rehabilitation measures were being taken by authorities concerned," the party said in a statement.
"Extremely saddened to learn of the accident at Dowleswaram barrage near Rajahmundry, AP. My deepest condolences to the families," Rahul tweeted.
The pilgrims' group, which was returning from a visit to Tirupati temple, met with the tragedy early today as the vehicle they were travelling in fell off a bridge at Dowleswaram near Rajahmundry.
Among the deceased are seven children, eight women and seven men, including the driver of the vehicle, who was also its owner, he added. The pilgrims hailed from Achyutapuram near Visakhapatnam.
A boy, who sustained injuries, is the lone survivor of the mishap. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
