Indian cueist Sourav Kothari, who was conferred with the Arjuna Award earlier this week, has got a wildcard to compete in his maiden World Professional Snooker event at the SangSom World 6 Red Snooker Championship in Bangkok from September 5-10.
Sourav got the International Billiards & Snooker Federation wild card by virtue of his fine performance in the recently-concluded World 6 Red Snooker Championship in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt.
The other Indian entries for this event are Pankaj Advani, a wild card entry from ACBS by virtue of being the current Asian 6 red Snooker Champion and Ishpreet Chadha, a wild card entry from IBSF.
In his first match, Sourav will be pitted against World No 21 Michael White of Wales before taking on World No 10 Joe Perry of England.
The current National Billiards Champion, Sourav, will represent India in the inaugural Asian Billiard Sports in Al-Fujairah, UAE from September 24-October 3.
World's top professional snooker players will compete in the invitational tournament which carries a prize purse of more than Rs 1.50 crore.
The field includes current World Snooker Champion and World No. 1 Mark Selby of England, World No. 2 Stuart Bingham, Chinese sensation and World Championship runner-up Ding Jun Hui, two times World Snooker Champion Mark Williams of Wales and a host of other top professionals of the World Snooker Main Tour.
In 2005, former World Billiards Champion and current chief National Cuesports Coach of India, Manoj Kothari was conferred with the Dhyan Chand Award.
With Sourav getting the first ever Arjuna Award for Cuesports in Bengal, it's a rare feat achieved by a father-son duo by becoming the Presidential Awardees in the same sport, president of West Bengal Billiards Association Pradip Saraogi said.
