North-West University spokesman Koos Degenaar said today that an administration block that included a science center was burned down last night. Student protesters also burned the residence of a dormitory supervisor.
Degenaar said the university in South Africa's North West province would be shut indefinitely and students still in dorms were being evacuated.
Degenaar said the violence started after a Students Representatives Council meeting was disrupted by protesters. The situation quickly escalated as private security guards tried to disperse the crowd using tear gas and rubber bullets.
