South African President Jacob Zuma has been discharged from a hospital after a weekend checkup that followed a demanding schedule, his office said today.
Zuma will continue to rest for a few days and will work mostly from home during that period, Zuma's office quoted presidential official Jeff Radebe as saying.
It said in a statement that the 72-year-old president left the hospital yesterday evening, and that he has two major medical examinations a year, the first in January and the second in June.
"This time round, the doctors felt he needed to be hospitalised for a thorough check-up following a demanding schedule," the statement said.
"The doctors are happy with the results."
Zuma's office said media reports that he made "unscheduled visits" to hospitals early this year were incorrect. It said all visits are booked in advance and "those mentioned were part of the annual first semester check-ups."
Last month, Zuma was inaugurated for a second five-year term following the election victory of the ruling African National Congress party, which has dominated politics since the end of white rule in 1994.
