Urmila defeated BJP's Ganga Charan Rajput by comfortable margin of over 40,000 votes in the bypoll that was held on Saturday, official sources said here.
The bye-election was necessitated after SP MLA Kaptan Singh was disqualified from the seat over conviction in a 13-year-old murder case.
Reacting on the victory, SP spokesman and cabinet minister Rajendra Chowdhury said that it was victory of chief minister AKhilesh Yadav's development agenda.
"The SP government has initiated a number of schemes for the welfare of common man, who are no aware about it. CM Akhilesh's only agenda is to make UP developed," he said.
In the 2012 assembly polls, Bharti had defeated Singh.
