Spanish court jails man for 16 years for attempted murder

Spain's Supreme Court has sentenced a man to 16 years in prison for attempting to kill his ex-partner, in whom he had emptied the clip of a semi-automatic pistol.
The woman had left the relationship because she said the man's "unfounded jealousy" had degenerated into abuse, including subjecting her to polygraph tests and sending her underwear to DNA laboratories to try and prove she was unfaithful.
Judge Carlos Granados today upheld a sentence handed down by Madrid's provincial court in March.
Granados' judgment says the 16-year relationship deteriorated after the couple had a son, when the man became "increasingly aggressive," punching the woman and monitoring her calls. In Feb. 2013, after a separation, he shot her in the back as she tried to walk away, the judgment says.
