Spurt in false rape complaints in Rampur: police

A senior police officer here warned of strict action against those filing "false" rape complaints, and claimed that there was a spurt in such cases in the district.
The Superintendent of Police, Vipin Tada, today said nearly 50 rape complaints were filed in the district in the last 10 days, and most of those investigated by the police were found to be false. He, however, did not specify the exact number of such complaints.
He said in most of the cases probed by the police, it was found that the complaints had been lodged by individuals just to implicate others due to personal rivalry.

"I have taken over as district police chief only about ten days earlier and during this very short span about 50 rape cases have been registered which is extremely startling.
"When we investigated some of these cases, we found that people had filed false complaints due to disputes. On May 25 alone, 12 cases of rape were registered," he said.
When police authorities refused to lodge "alleged fictitious complaints of rape, they knocked the doors of the court and we were compelled to register those," said the police chief.
In Bilaspur town, six persons allegedly involved in lodging "fake complaint" were arrested while eight such persons in all have been booked for lodging "baseless complaints", the SP said.

The police officer said he has issued strict instructions to in-charge of all police stations to take up "impartial investigations" and take action against anyone filing false complaint.
