Production company Bad Robot tweeted a picture of a clapper board from the set of the film, reported Guardian online.
JJ Abrams is also expected to shoot scenes for the film in Morocco and Tunisia later this year.
It is the first film to be released by Disney, after George Lucas sold the franchise rights in 2012.
Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew will return to the series, while new castmembers include Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow and Daisy Ridley.
