Steps for providing UD ID progressing

The work to provide disability certificates to persons with disabilities is progressing and Kerala is one among the 14 states selected to implement the project in the first phase, Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Dr Kamalesh Kumar Pandey said here today.
Presently each states were providing different certificates and with introduction of Unique Disability ID and linking the same with Aadhar would eliminate any double entry in lists, Pandey told reporters here.
Parliament has passed a new act to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, he said adding the legislation would come into affect from April next.
With the new act coming into force, list of persons included in the disability category would go up from seven to 21, he said. Government has also power to add new category in the list if necessary, he added.
The job reservation for disabled persons would also go up from present 3 per cent to four per cent.
Centre has selected 50 cities for its Accessible India campaign and Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are also among them, he said. At least 100 buildings in these cities would be made disabled friendly, he said.
Pandey was in the State attend the review meeting on the implementation of law connected with the right of disabled persons.
Pandey held discussions with heads of different departments, social organisations and take stock of the situation in the state. He wanted the state to start more training centres for disabled persons.
