Steps to check sea erosion in Ullal

The Kerala government has proposed to construct off-shore reefs to check sea erosion at Ullal in Dakshina Kannada district, an area constantly threatened by the fury of the waves.
The reefs would be constructed like a wall in sea around 700 metres from the sea shore, Karnataka Sustainable Coastal Protection and Management Investment Programme project Director P Channappa Naik said in a release here today.
Naik said the reefs would be constructed using concrete tetra pods and huge rocks to check wave intensity. The base length and width of the reefs would be 350 metres and 50 metres respectively and the height would be seven metres.

The work on the Rs 110 crore project, taken up under the guidance of the Central Power and Water Research Station (CPWRS), Pune, would start after September. A team of scientists from CPWRS would visit Ullal soon, the release said.
