A BSP member today demanded in Rajya Sabha that television serials portraying women in bad light should be stopped as they are having a negative influence on society.
Initiating a discussion on the working of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Satish Chandra Misra said serials are often showing women hatching conspiracies in family and are a force of destablisation.
"It has a bad impact on mind. This should be stopped," Misra said.
His views were, however, contested by Jaya Bachchan (SP), an actor herself, who said serials are a reflection of things happening in society.
Misra appeared not satisfied with her statement but said she is a role model for cine-goers who have admired her role in various movies.
He also took on a leading actor of the country whose semi-nude posters have come up recently, wondering what kind of message he was sending to society as he had also hosted programmes highlighting social issues and had met the Prime Minister recently.
Voicing concern over rising crimes against women, he said the government has failed to address their issues and there was nothing new in the schemes announced for them in this year's budget.
The government, he said, needs to pay focus on atrocities against women especially those hailing from SC and ST community as well as migrants.
He felt the provision of in-house committees in various organisations to deal with sexual harassment cases would remain ineffective as these could be influenced by officials.
He said the goverment should consider providing legal aid to women who are victim of atrocities and enact a legislation for the purpose.
