The movement of commercial vehicles was affected in many parts of Madhya Pradesh today on the first day of indefinite strike of truckers for demands including slashing of fuel prices and toll charges.
Parvinder Singh Bhatia, president of Federation of Madhya Pradesh Motors and Goods Transport Association, claimed that 95 per cent of the state's around 25,000 transporters are participating in the strike.
"A few trucks can be seen on the roads because they had left for their destinations before the strike was called. Transporters have stopped taking new bookings (for cargo)," he said.
Ajay Sharma, President of Madhya Pradesh Transport Association, said truck owners were taking part in the strike without any duress. Long queues of stationary commercial vehicles could be seen in Bhopal's Transport Nagar, he said.
After the failure of talks with the Centre late last night, the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) called for an indefinite strike from today.
