Meghalaya and Assam have 12 areas of difference along the inter-state border.

The border situation became worse when in May, 2010 four youths from Meghalaya were shot dead by the Assam police during a clash at Langpih.

"The AASU has expressed its willingness to put pressure on the Assam government to solve the long-pending border dispute between the two states which has affected the lives of indigenous people residing on the border," KSU president Daniel Khyriem told reporters here.

According to the student leader, the students body of both the states have decided to air their grievances and the need to end the crisis after realising that the people who were allegedly pushed by Assam to the border were non-indigenous Assamese.

Meanwhile, North East Students Organisation Information and Publicity Secretary Samuel B Jyrwa said the KSU along with the rest of the student bodies from all states in the region would assemble at Guwahati on June 7 as a mark of protest and to highlight the burning issues concerning the region.

The student bodies would follow up with their respective governments by organising a sit-in demonstration in front of their respective Raj Bhavans, he said.

The NESO demands special status for NE as it was done with Jammu and Kashmir.
