The Kolkata Police today arrested a person for sending threat messages to Leader of Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay, a senior police officer said.
Dipanjan Mitra, 32, was arrested at around 6 pm this evening by the Anti Rowdy Section of the Kolkata Police from his Kasba house, he said.
Acting on an FIR filed by the TMC MP at Taltala police station, the police arrested the man, a web designer and a freelance photographer, on the basis of his mobile phone's tower location, an IPS officer said..
The mobile phone, from which the text messages to Bandyopadhyay were sent, was also seized, he said adding that Mitra has "admitted" to committing the crime.
"Mitra has been booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 120B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy)," he said.
Talking about Mitra's intention of sending the threat texts to Bandyopadhyay, the IPS officer said, "Though he has admitted to his crime, he has not revealed what was the reason behind the act. We are looking into it."
The officer said Mitra was not accompanied by anybody in committing the crime.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had said yesterday that Bandyopadhyay received the threat messages only because he was vocal on several issues in Parliament including 'intolerance'.
Bandyopadhyay had yesterday requested the Union Home Minister to take the issue seriously.
