Senior diplomat Sujan R Chinoy has been appointed as India's Ambassador to Japan, succeeding Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa.
Chinoy, a 1981-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as India's Ambassador to Mexico.
He is expected to take up his assignment shortly, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
Before assuming charge of India's Ambassador to Mexico in August 2012, Chinoy was Additional Secretary in the National Security Council Secretariat in the PMO where he dealt with strategic policy and national security issues.
He had served in the Indian Missions in Hong Kong and Beijing. He was also Consul General of India in Shanghai and in Sydney. He had also worked at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York.
Bilateral ties between India and Japan are on an upswing and both sides have resolved to expand ties in a range of key areas including trade and investment.
