Cadres of ruling AIADMK and TTV Dhinakaran-led AMMK pelted stones at each other when he visited RK Nagar constituency to distribute welfare assistance to beneficiaries, according to police.
Even before Dhinakaran's arrival, AIADMK workers staged a protest in Tondiarpet area and accused the MLA, who represents RK Nagar, of not fulfilling his poll promises.
While the protest was on, supporters of both the parties pelted stones at each other.
"Cadres of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam and AIADMK pelted stones at each other, injuring a few, including a policewoman," a police official told PTI.
He said the party workers were dispersed and additional police pickets posted in the area.
Later, Dhinakaran alleged that supporters of a ruling party leader were behind the stone-throwing.
He told reporters that the stone throwing incident was a fallout of a forgery case filed against a North Chennai based ruling party leader in a court by one of his supporters.
AIADMK had opposed his previous visits to RK Nagar.
This time too they waved Rs 20 notes as before in an apparent reiteration of a charge that money promised to vote in favour of the AMMK leader during the December 2017 RK Nagar bypoll was not given.
The AIADMK and other parties had alleged that Rs 20 notes were distributed as a 'token' by supporters of Dhinakaran for payment of money later.
Dhinakaran had trashed the allegation, saying it was borne out of frustration of ruling party workers.
