The undertrial prisoner identified as Tanvir alias Jambu was arrested in Karachi's Ibrahim Hyderi in 2014 for possessing explosives and is suspected to be a bomber.
Police had recovered hand grenades and other explosive devices from Tanvir's possession at the time of arrest.
A police official said he escaped from the custody of the special investigation unit when he was taken to the ATC for his hearing.
"He somehow managed to unlock his handcuffs when brought to the court and disappeared in the court premises at Sindh Secretariat where there are no boundary walls," a police officer said.
