The incident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, killing Suresh Mewalal Yadav, a resident of Dhanbag Pandripada of Valiv (Vasai), API Sunil Solshe of Valiv police station told PTI.
Yadav's wounded body was recovered from the locality yesterday morning and was sent for postmortem.
The victim was thrashed with sticks, stones and bamboos following which he collapsed on the spot and died, police said.
At least half a dozen suspects have been taken into custody from the locality.
