The incident came to light when the victim's body was found from Tharali area of the Chamoli district yesterday.
Deputy District Magistrate Anup Kumar Notiyal said that prima facie it appeared to be the case of rape and murder but the exact reason would be ascertained only from the report of the post-mortem, which was done today.
The victim, resident of Bundela village of Narain Kasba in Chamoli, had gone to buy milk from the market yesterday morning. When she didn't return home, the family members started searching for the girl and found her body from bushes near the village later in the day, he said.
The accused policeman (suspended) Virendra Singh, who was posted at Rudraprayag district, was produced in the court today and from there he was sent to jail, the Deputy DM said.
