While welcoming the directive to give preference to domestic electronic products in government procurement, the industry chamber said it would be in the fitness of things if the electronics industry was given a boost by a comprehensive package so that the country's import dependence is reduced.
In the overall IT package, the electronics industry has remained a missing link along with the computer hardware, it said.
"Large-scale manufacturing zones should be developed with fiscal sops and procedural ease to promote the electronic industry," Assocham President Rana Kapoor told PTI.
All ministries and departments will henceforth have to prefer domestically-manufactured electronic products in government procurement, according to the new directive influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make-in-India' initiative.
