CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today filed his nomination papers from Kulgam assembly segment of south Kashmir, seeking a fourth consecutive term.
Tarigami filed his nomination papers before the Returning Officer of Kulgam. He was accompanied by Independent legislators Ghulam Hassan Mir and Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, with whom he has formed a third front in the state.
Addressing a public meeting later, Tarigami said peace in South Asia was subservient to cordial relations between India and Pakistan and hostilities on the Line of Control (LoC) be pacified to foster peace and ensure development in the sub-continent.
"I appeal to both the countries (India and Pakistan) to carry forward a meaningful dialogue for exploring means to resolve bilateral issues including Kashmir...," he said.
The CPI(M) leader said the political set-up in the state was being "humiliated by the opportunists and defectionists" which has eroded the faith of people in democracy and electoral process.
He said divisive forces were trying to create differences among people on communal lines.
He demanded that the recent devastating floods in the state be declared a national disaster and a massive economic package be given to bring the state back on the rails of development.
Tarigami has retained the Kulgam assembly seat since 1996 for three terms.
