Replying to a debate on the issue raised in the State Legislative Assembly through a calling attention notice by Vijay Waddetiwar (Congress) and others, Tawde said there are about 3,000-5,000 illegal labs out of which 60 to 70 per cent are in urban areas.
He said there is no legal provision to act against unauthorised labs at present.
"It was because of this that the Maharashtra Paramedical Council Act was passed in 2011. The bill has been sent to the President for approval. However, the Centre has suggested some amendments. The state government is ready to make the necessary amendments and resend it to the Centre. Opinion of the law and judiciary department has also been sought," he said.
