The teacher was arrested on the basis of a complaint of the student's father who told police his son had suffered injuries in the back due to the beating, they said.
The private school is located in Tarnaka locality.
Osmania University Police inspector V Ashok Reddy said a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act had been registered.
Police said preliminary investigations had revealed the boy had allegedly beaten up some of his classmates after which he was punished by the teacher.
