An elephant of Subramaniswamy temple at Tiruchendur in Tuticorin district died today due dehydration caused by diarrhoea, officials said.
The 13-year-old elephant, Kumaran, had diarrhoea for the past two days, and veterinary doctors had been summoned from Mumbai to treat the elephant.
However, the condition of the male elephant did not improve and it died early this morning.
Temple authorities and priests performed the last rites of the elephant.
Hundreds of local people paid homage to the pachyderm.
The temple also has a female elephant.
