The fish market at
Kamapalli will be shifted to the Mardharaj vending zone near MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.
Earlier, traders had opposed the move and stopped selling fish saying the new market is too small to accommodate all sellers. "We had to convince the traders and they agreed to shift," said MLA (Berhampur) R C Chyaupatnaik.
He said Berhampur Municipal Corporation has constructed 38 shops in which the wholesale fish traders could be accommodated. The corporation has spent about Rs 30 lakh on construction of the fish market.
Kamapalli fish market association officials, however, said they had 280 members. "The new market can accommodate only 38 persons. Livelihood of other traders, including those who sell fish on the roadside, will be affected once the market is shifted," said President of the association P Patnaik.
"The civic body will accommodate more sellers at other places. We will construct air-conditioned fish markets after obtaining land from Berhampur Development Authority," the MLA said. The town has one air-conditioned market, Giri market.
Ganjam Bar Association had been demanding the shifting of the fish market from Kamapalli for several years as it was located near the district judge court and led to lot of unhygienic conditions.
