The proposed medical
college at Koraput will be affiliated to the Berhampur University (BU).
The syndicate, the apex decision-making body of the university, has accepted the proposal of the Director Medical Education and Training (DMET) for affiliation to 100 seats of the medical college in principle.
A three-member Local Enquiry Committee (LEC) has been formed and it will submit its report to the syndicate before the latter finally approves the affiliation proposal, said vice-chancellor, Berhampur University, Deepak Kumar Behera.
It is important for the proposed college to get the permission from Medical Council of India (MCI) to start functioning from 2017-18, said principal of MKCG Medical College A K Dandapat, who is a member of LEC.
July 7 is the last date to apply for Centre's approval for functioning of the medical college and the affiliation process has to get over before that, he said. A team from the MCI is likely to visit the medical college to take stock of its progress during October-November.
The medical college is being constructed on 52 acres adjacent to the district hospital at an estimated cost of around Rs 187 crore. The Centre is bearing 75 per cent of the project cost.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone of the college on August 3, 2015.
