Railway police had initially suspected the counter staff for the loss of money and started investigations. In the meantime, the three staff on duty at the counter at that time had jointly reimbursed the money, fearing action.
The mystery behind the case was solved after Madhusoodan (39), a resident of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu was arrested by Goa police in connection with the theft of about Rs 12 lakh from the Bank of India branch at Mapusa there.
The accused was produced before a court here yesterday and later taken to Goa, the sources said.
