Thousands of devotees from various parts of the country reached Vailankanni, the famous Christian pilgrim centre in this district in connection with the 'Palm Sunday' procession, which marks the beginning of the week long Easter Celebrations at the Shrine Basillica.
The events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus are considered holy for the Christians and they celebrate the whole week preceding the Easter as 'Holy Week'.
A colourful 'Palm Sunday' procession was conducted. After special prayers, priests carried palm leaves and children were given crosses made from single palm leaves.
