Three cobras rescued in Delhi, one from JNU hostel

Three cobras were rescued from different parts of the city, including at a girl's hostel in JNU today, triggering panic among the students, a wildlife NGO today said.

At the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, the cobra caused quite the hysteria in the girls' wing inside the hostel, Wildlife SOS said in a statement.

The snake was later carefully carried out of the premises.

The two other snakes were found at a municipal health centre in Badli village and government school in Laxmi Bai Nagar, the NGO said.

"On catching a glimpse of the nearly 5-foot-long snake inside the medical supply room at the centre (in Badli village), the petrified staff decided to lock the room shut to confine its movement and immediately contacted us," it said.

In the meantime, the snake had sought shelter under a cupboard making it difficult for the rescuers to extricate it without alarming it.

"It took rescuers almost 30 minutes to safely carry out the operation," the NGO said.

Soon after, the team received a call from the Government Senior Secondary School in Laxmi Bai Nagar about a nearly 4-foot-long cobra that was found wandering inside the school canteen.

After ensuring that all potential hiding places and escape routes were blocked off, the Wildlife SOS team carefully transferred the snake into a safe transport container.

All three cobras are currently kept under observation and will be released back into the wild soon, the NGO added.
