Three persons died on the spot and two others were injured seriously when the tempo in which they were travelling collided with a trailer-truck on Mumbai-Agra highway in Thane district Thursday.
The tempo was heading for Shahpur when the accident took place near Pandargol village around 8 am, police said.
The deceased were identified as tempo driver Navnath Devkar (35), Milka Vaze (18) and Sujata Vaze (23).
After hitting the tempo, the truck ran onto the railway tracks along the road, which affected train services on Mumbai-Nashik route for about an hour, the police said.
The truck driver went missing after the accident and a search was on for him, officials said.
