With the arrest of three persons, a gang of fraudsters who allegedly cheated people by promising them refund on their lapsed insurance policies, has been busted.
The accused Amit Khanna, 40, Akshay Sharma, 21, and Bhupender Sharma, 25, were arrested yesterday in connection with a complaint lodged by a New Rajinder Nagar resident Manju Verma who had been cheated by them, DCP of Central Delhi, Paramaditya said.
Verma paid them Rs 2,44,250 on the pretext of various taxes and charges, he said.
The complainant told police that she had purchased 5 policies worth Rs 3,20,700 in 2012 and 2013 which had lapsed later on.
She had paid Rs 2,44,250 to the accused as taxes and charges inducing her to get back Rs 5-8 lakh of her invested money, the DCP said.
The victim approached police when a fresh demand of a cheque of Rs 76,580 as service tax in return of a cheque of refund of Rs 5,47,000 was made, he said.
A trap was laid to catch the person who had contacted Verma to receive the cheque at her house. Amit Khanna was caught as he dropped in to collect the cheque yesterday, the officer said.
Interrogation of Amit led to the arrest of Akshay and Bupender. Both of them worked with insurance companies and obtained details of policy holders of lapsed insurance policies who were later duped by the gang on the pretext of helping them get back their invested money, the DCP said.
