TIFAC identifies plastic cluster in Dharavi for study

Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) has identified plastic cluster in the Dharavi area here for a technical gap analysis study.
It has roped in city-based Institute of Chemical Technology as knowledge partner for the purpose.
TIFAC is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and acts as a think tank within government setup.
The study will also include problem of dumping of plastics as well as process to minimise it.
"Under our MSME programme, we have identified plastic cluster in the Dharavi area for a technical gap analysis study and roped in Institute of Chemical Technology as knowledge partner for this study," TIFAC executive director Prabhat Ranjan told PTI here.

"Through the study, we are trying to improve the economic condition of the plastic workers in the Dharavi area. Also, we are trying to see how the recycled plastic can be used for different things by the help of 3D printing technology," he added.

The plastic processing sector comprises of over 30,000 units involved in producing a variety of items through injection moulding blow moulding, extrusion and calendaring.
In Mumbai region there are over 1,500 units engage in processing of plastics. All these industries are manufacturing plastic items over 25 microns thickness.
These units are located mainly in Dharavi, Lalbaugh, Wadala and Andheri areas of the mega-polis.

Meanwhile, speaking about Technology Vision 2035 of TIFAC, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 3, he said, "it's a set of 13 documents which includes Technology Vision 2035 and 12 road-maps to achieve the same. We will be releasing those documents one by one in a phased manner.
