"The victim, Krishna Pal Singh, was patrolling the area yesterday with another guard when a tiger pounced on him from behind a tree," Forest SDO, R K Tiwari said.
"Several shots were fired at the tiger by the other guard but that could not deter the animal from dragging the victim into the forest," he said.
The tiger later left the body of the guard and ran into the forest.
The forest officials handed over the body to the police which was then sent for postmortem.
He also gave the family Rs 25,000 for the last rites of the deceased.
